BYU Mens Lacrosse slaughters some Grizzlies

BYU Mens Lacrosse issued a crushing 29-2 defeat to the Montana Grizzlies during the snowiest game the team had ever played. Unforced turnovers, diminished vision, and lost footing were commonplace throughout the game for both teams.

After a very difficult first few minutes of the first quarter, coach Schneck decided to encourage his team to outplay the Grizzlies by turning it into a running game. By limiting their number of passes and assisted shots on goal, the Cougars were able to establish a 13-1 lead by halftime.

After loosing a number of balls in the snow in the first half, and having the field plowed by a tractor during halftime, the snow finally eased up. This allowed the Cougars to revert to their usual power plays and put in some of their more junior players. After Michael Watterson's final behind-the-back shot, the Cougars put the Grizzles away with a 29-2 final score.

BYU College Gymnastics Rankings Improve With Double Victory

The BYU COLLEGE GYMNASTICS TEAM (No. 28) upset the Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 12) last friday with a stunning performance and final score of 195.000. This win helped improve the Cougars' record to 10-2-2. While the Razorbacks had a tough night on the beam, the Cougars enjoyed steady consistent performances on each event throughout the meet.

BYU Basketball 2010-2011 Schedule

BYU Basketball 2010-2011 schedule is negotiated far in advance of the season. This process of finalizing the BYU basketball schedule influenced more than the flight itinerary for this team. Coach Rose, hired in 2005 with an astounding 127-40 record at BYU, has worked for some time to set the pace and tone for Jimmer Fredette's, Jackson Emery's and their teammates' season. Four home games remain. The BYU basketball 2010-2011 schedule has an uncertain--yet very promising!--finish with a month prefacing March Madness!

BYU Men's Volleyball National Champions

BYU men's volleyball returned home with the men's third national title within the span of five years. This BYU men's volleyball team is the challenge that the nation looks to dethrone each year. The team carried the hardest fought for trophy won in 2004 against Long Beach State. This epic face-off won by BYU men's volleyball on May 8, 2004 was "the most intense championship match in BYU men's volleyball history." Cougar-town was alight with energy and passion when the team returned from Honolulu, Hawaii with the national title.

BYU Football 2011-12 Season: The Big Move to Independence

Cougarfan Report: Pac-12 Players Join Independent BYU Football

I just saw a link on Cougarfan with an article regarding Pac-12 players joining BYU football.

2011-12 should be an interesting season with BYU football going independent. Along with the move announced during last football season, the school reached a deal with ESPN to televise BYU football games through 2018.

The big move for the BYU Cougars' leading sport earns it a spot on BYU's Greatest Sports Moments.

2011 - A Historic Year for BYU Basketball

BYU Basketball Experiencing a Historic 2011

BYU Schedule Produces Single-Loss Season (thus far)

This year is looking to be a historic year in BYU basketball.

The BYU schedule has put them at 18-1 so far this season and the Cougars are currently ranked #9 in the NCAA Men's Basketball Rankings.
2011 NCAA BYU Basketball Ranking

ESPN's "bracketology" just ranked BYU as a number 2 seed -- that's indication of a potential Elite Eight showing.
BYU Basketball a 2-Seed in ESPN Bracketology

The BYU Cougars have not ranked this high since the 1987-1988 season when the Cougars achieved a #2 ranking during a season ending with a 26-6 record. BYU basketball made it to the NCAA in 1988, but not into the Sweet Sixteen. If Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery can lead the BYU Cougars to the Elite Eight, it will be the first time since 1981

The BYU schedule has the cougars playing San Diego state (ranked #6) on Wed. Jan. 26, 2011 -- probably the Cougar's toughest game of the year.

Should be a big night at the Marriott Center for BYU basketball.

Ty Detmer wins Heisman Trophy

In 1990, Ty Detmer won for BYU Football its one and only Heisman Trophy.

Ty Detmer with his Heisman Trophy

Ty Detmer during his career broke 59 NCAA records and tied for a few more.  He managed to throw over 16,206 yards and scored 127 touchdowns.  This quarterback truly was one of the best quarterbacks to have ever played for BYU.

There have been a couple of people from people during the past years that have been nominated for the same trophy, but none have been able to win outright and win what Ty Detmer did just over 20 years ago.

BYU football looks forward to the day when they are able to have yet another Ty Detmer play for the team.  This time around, may we can have another championship, even with the BCS around.

BYU Football Wins National Title

The number one sports moment for the BYU Cougars was in 1984, when BYU Football won the national title.

This title was awarded before the Bowl Championship Series (or BCS) coalition had been formed.  BYU Football found themselves at the end of the season without a loss and excited to be the number one team in the nation.  They defeated Michigan to win the title in a bowl that was played before New Years Day, which has never been done before or since.

This moment was incredible not only for BYU Football, but also the national presence of the school in general.  Recruiting and winning have been on the up ever since and many great things are sure to come for BYU football in the future.

Fredette Leads College Basketball in Scoring

Jimmer Fredette On Front Cover Of Sports Illustrated

Fredette Makes A Name For Himself

Before the 2010-2011 basketball season the name Jimmer Fredette didn't mean much to most college basketball fans nationwide. Jimmer started the season steady and consistent earning the respect of the nation in a humble manner as he surpassed UCONN's Kemba Walker as the leading scorer when he dropped 47 points against BYU's rival, the Runnin' Utes. Jimmer is leading the nation in scoring averaging a whopping 26.1 points per game! Fredette is being considered for the college basketball player of the year due to his stellar performances so far this year.

Leading the BYU Cougars in the NCAA tournament in March is his ultimate goal and ESPN's Joe Lunardi is already predicting BYU to be a number 2 seed this year. Who knows what else Jimmer has in store this season!

Jackson Emery Beats Danny Ainge Long-standing Record

Jackson Emery finally broke Ainge's mark of 195 steals when he took the ball away from Utah's freshman J.J. O'Brien as BYU was blazing against University of Utah with speed and agility. Danny Ainge played for the Cougars in the early '80s preceding his induction into BYU's Hall of Fame. He led BYU to the NCAA's Elite Eight during his time in the Marriott Center. Jackson Emery, from Alpine, Utah, has played for BYU for four seasons. Emery's statistics speak volumes for him in equalizing--then surpassing!--Ainge in the university record books.

BYU Lacrosse - Three time national champions

For BYU lacrosse Cougarfans, May 19, 2007 was a glorious day.

Following a 16 game winning streak, the BYU men's lacrosse team crushed Oregon 16-9 at the Pizza Hut Park in Dallas, TX. Having been defeated by Oregon 8-7 earlier in a regular season game, BYU knew they had to step up their game if they were to regain the title from their 1997 and 2000 victories.

It was a no-score game until the Ducks scored at the 14-minute mark. However, the Cougars immediately returned with three back-to-back goals. The rest of the game followed suit, and from looking at the final score you might have thought you were at a football game in the LaVell Edwards Stadium.

For more in-depth coverage of this event, check out KSL.com's coverage of the lacrosse championship game.
